Build The Network You Actually Need

decisions networking productivity Mar 04, 2025

In today’s hyperconnected world, it’s easy to mistake networking for connection. We attend events, collect LinkedIn contacts, and follow industry leaders on social media. It is easy to become overwhelmed by all of the options. But at the end of the day, are we truly surrounded by the right people—the ones who genuinely support, challenge, and elevate us?

This is exactly what I explored in a recent episode of Distracted with Janine Garner—a business mentor, keynote speaker, and bestselling author known for her deep insights into authentic networking and relationship-building.

One thing became very clear in our conversation: The way we’ve been taught to network is fundamentally flawed.

The Networking Myth: Why Traditional Approaches Fail

We’ve all heard it before: “Networking is key to success.” But what most people don’t realise is that traditional networking—going to events, swapping business cards, and perfecting an elevator pitch—is often a waste of time if you’re not intentional.

As Janine put it:

“Networking isn’t about learning seven easy steps to connect. It’s not about your LinkedIn count or the number of business cards you collect. True networking is about connection—genuine human connection.”

Too often, professionals find themselves:

  • Attending endless networking events but not making meaningful connections.

  • Feeling overwhelmed by social media “gurus” shouting for attention.

  • Struggling to find people who genuinely have their best interests at heart.

If this sounds familiar, it’s time to rethink your approach.

Building a Network That Actually Works for You

In the face of too many options it is easy to become so overwhelmed that we choose to do nothing at all or we make a reactive decision that does not align to what is best for us.

Janine recommended in our conversation that instead of trying to connect with everyone, start by focusing on finding four key people who will genuinely support your growth.

Janine's four essential network roles makes the process achievable. She shares the four roles we need people for in our network are;

🔹 The Promoter: This is the person who sees your potential and actively opens doors for you. They advocate for your work, introduce you to opportunities, and help you reach the next level.

🔹 The Teacher: A mentor or expert who expands your knowledge and challenges your thinking. They help you grow, providing insights and guidance without ego.

🔹 The Pit Crew: These are your trusted confidants—the ones who care about YOU as a person, not just your business success. They celebrate your wins, support you through setbacks, and help you stay grounded.

🔹 The Butt Kicker: The accountability partner who won’t let you make excuses. They push you beyond your comfort zone and hold you to your commitments.

How to Find These People in Your Life

Instead of frantically “networking” with strangers, start by looking closer to home:

Who already supports and advocates for you? (They might already be in your world!)

Who challenges and expands your thinking?

Who is there for you unconditionally?

Who pushes you to be better—even when it’s uncomfortable?

These key people may already be around you—you just haven’t recognised them yet.

The Secret to Meaningful Connections: Give More Than You Take

Once you’ve identified these key players, invest in those relationships.

  • Be intentional—Reach out with clarity. Instead of vague requests like “Can I pick your brain?”, be specific: “I admire the way you’ve grown your business. What’s one piece of advice you’d give me?”

  • Give first, without expectation—Offer insights, introductions, or support before asking for anything in return.

  • Say ‘Thank You For…’—Instead of a generic “thanks,” acknowledge what someone did for you. (“Thank you for sharing that insight on scaling a business—I’ve already started applying it!”)

The Future of Success Lies in Connection, Not Just Contacts

As Janine so powerfully put it:

“We don’t need more LinkedIn connections. We need to surround ourselves with people who truly see us, challenge us, and elevate us.”

So, if you’ve been feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure about who you need in your life, start here:

  1. Identify the four key roles in your network.

  2. Look for who is already in your life that fits those roles.

  3. Intentionally build those relationships through giving, gratitude, and genuine connection.

It’s not about collecting people—it’s about choosing the right ones.
