Starting school off on the right foot

School is back and I am having so much fun! The first week or two is hectic for everyone. But right now we are moving out of chaotic running around to establishing new routines and settling in. I have welcomed so many kids into their first year of school and provided support to parents who found the transition a little more difficult thank their kids. So if you are a parent of a child starting school, starting a new year or a new school there are a few simple but important ways you can help your child settle in and feel confident in facing the year ahead.

  1. Establish a daily routine: Consistency is key when it comes to routines for children. Create a schedule that includes a set bedtime and morning routine to help your child start their day off right. This will help them feel more organized and prepared for the school day.
  2. Make learning fun: At the start of the year kids can feel like they had a big shock. So many rules and new people telling them what to do all the time. So many new ideas and concepts to learn. If your child is tired their capacity to focus on homework is low and their physical ability to attend is diminished. The way around this is make learning fun and in short spurts. This might be painting outside on a hot day or making dinner with you weighing and measuring or singing the new phonics song. Kids learn when they are playing and having fun.
  3. Be involved in their education: Life is busy and it can feel hard to do the juggle. Where you can attend school events, volunteer when you can as a parent helper, and communicate with your child's teacher either through the class app or even better, in person. Be interested and show interest in your child's day. This will help you to address any issues as they arise and enhance connection with your child as you learn who their friends are, what the latest game is and the school yard lingo!
  4. Encourage organizational skills: Help your child learn to stay organized and keep track of their school supplies, schoolwork and notes by having a consistent place for their bag, lunch box and uniforms. This helps your child know where to find things. This encourages our kids to become more independent, which means, less reliance on you!
  5. Support their emotional well-being: Starting school can be an emotional time for children. Listen to your child's concerns and offer reassurance and encouragement. Help them to understand that it's okay to make mistakes and that they can always ask for help when needed. Show your child that they have your support and that you are there to help them navigate their new school environment.

Remember, with a positive and supportive approach, you can help your child start the school year off on the right foot and set them up for a successful and fulfilling learning journey.
